Astronomy Picture Project

SUBMIT YOUR FINAL PROJECT HERE

Please select one set of pictures from the table below (some objects have obvious color schemes, some objects will require a WEE bit of research).

Click HERE (see especially the "Hubble Palette" at the bottom of the page) or HERE for an explanation of how different elements produce different colors of light (remember our gas tubes?)

As you download each file, be SURE to name it appropriately based on the element that is present in the file name.

For example:

Take a look at this filename:

Notice the actual filename at the end:

  • The object name is carina
  • The object was photographed using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
  • The photograph was taken in h light-- meaning hydrogen(red-- see key above)
  • So I would suggest naming that file carina_red

PHOTOSHOP HELP is HERE

For a successful photo project you should:

1) Strive to bring out the MOST detail you can from each of your images

  • Clicking on the layer name area in the lower right of the screen brings up a very helpful screen. Use that to change opacity and other features
  • Changing Hue/Sauration, Contrast/Brightness will be helpful
  • If you are comfortable, consider using the 'magnetic lasso' tool to zero in on specific regions and work with those
  • Notice that you can move the layers by dragging them above and below

2) Provide a smooth blending of all of your images

3) Try to avoid distractions

4) Artistic interpretations are fine as long as they don't conflict with the above criteria
